News / MERCANTE LAUNCHES AT SHERATON LONDON PARK LANE
04 July 2016
Mercante is a new Italian food market concept that aims to deliver fresh and seasonal Italian fair in a relaxed and friendly Mayfair neighbourhood setting. Inspired by the bustling markets of great Italian cities such as Rome, Venice and Napoli, the menu consists of high-quality produce and dishes influenced by regional specialties and traditional homespun recipes.
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Mercante is the perfect space for bringing friends and family together, with a large indoor dining room and south-facing terrace to accommodate all types of occasion - from an intimate dinner date to a large celebration. The menu will change regularly to reflect everyday market food and “Per Oggi” daily specials.
The menu has been created by Head Chef Davide D’ignazio, a young Italian talent who is drawing on his experience in some of the world’s best restaurants to create dishes that elevate the produce and ingredients of his home country. Using his creative flair and knowledge gleaned from working with several Michelin starred chefs, Davide has brought together a range of dishes and flavours that represent the distinct regions and traditions of Italian cuisine.
The menu is divided into seven sections: Spuntini (small plates), Salumi & Formaggio (cold cuts & cheese), Fritti & Forno (fried & baked), Grano & Pasta (wheat & pasta), Carne & Pesce (meat & fish) Contorni (side dishes) and Dolci (desserts), with dishes available in ‘small’, ‘medium’, or ‘large’. The guests can choose to have each course individually or to share. The cold cuts and cheese will be served in 30g, 60g and 90g servings for diners to help themselves from the large selection that will change daily.
To start, choose from a variety of small plates to share, including Polpo in Umido from Sicily, Farinata and Roasted Alioli from Liguria and Calamari Fritti from Puglia, interspersed with portions of freshly carved Wild Boar, Bresaola and Prosciutto Crudo di Parma (24 months).
Main courses include Rabbit alla Cacciatora, and Roast Chicken with Peppers, a traditional Rome favourite. Inspired by the Sicilian coast, Grilled Mackerel, Wild Fennel & Citrus Salad provides a light and summery option and the fresh fish of the day, sourced from the market that morning, is baked in salt crust.
Pasta and gnocchi are handmade on-site by the kitchen team, choose from Tuscan Parpadelle, Asparagus & Pancetta, Linguini, Clams & Bottarga from Sardinia, or classic Gnocchi & Smoked Duck Ragu.
Sweet-toothed diners can finish the meal with desserts including Prosecco Semifreddo & Sour Cherries, Caprese Cake with Ricotta Ice Cream and classic Tiramisu. The food menu is accompanied by an exclusively Italian drinks list encompassing classic aperitifs, a range of specialist wines and a complimentary homemade Limoncello for each guest.
A rustic Italian breakfast is also served in the restaurant with a daily Salumi counter providing a variety of cold cuts and cheeses and warm freshly baked bread. Fruit, cereals and other breakfast patisseries will also be available alongside quality Italian coffee.
A warm Italian greeting on arrival welcomes the guests into the market-to-table experience. In addition to the carefully curated dishes on offer, the focus on creating an authentic Italian dining experience is seen in Mercante’s hand-prepared menu with the history of the great Italian ‘Mercantes’ and the hand-drawn illustrations of produce such as carciofo, pomodoro and puntarella on the walls. The centrepiece is an intricate hand-drawn map of Italy that covers a whole wall.
Mercante is authentically Italian – fresh, seasonal and eclectic, providing London’s Mayfair with a new dining hotspot for all occasions.
